How To Install a Municipal Back up water Supply in 10 steps

rototank, rainwater installation, water tanks

To set up a municipal backup tank, start by locating the municipal inline feed from your meter. Once you’ve found it, determine an access point to split the line at the specified location for your tank.

Always make sure that your tank is positioned on level ground, clear of any obstructions like stones and tree roots. For larger tanks, it is recommended to construct a foundation plinth to support the tank properly.

When selecting the appropriate pump for your installation, consider the following Questions:

If you currently have solar or plan to install it, you will need a VSP or HMS pump that is compatible with solar energy.

For one tap, choose a 0.37 kW pump; for two taps, opt for a 0.55 kW pump; for four taps, go for a 0.75 kW pump; and for four to six taps, select a 1.1 kW pump.

If your home is a double story, it’s best to choose the 1.1 kW pump to ensure adequate head height to your geyser.

Install Your Municipal Back up Water Supply in 10 steps

Here is a step-by-step guide for setting up a water tank system connected to the municipal inline water feed, incorporating a float valve, suction hose, pump, and optional components like a three-stage filter and UV light:

Step 1: Prepare the Ground Base

  • Ensure the area where the RotoTank will be placed is level and solid.
  • Build a stable concrete base to support the full weight of the tank when filled with water.

Step 2: Install the Water Tank

  • Place the RotoTank™ on the solid base.
  • Position it near the incoming municipal water feed to ensure ease of connection.

Step 3: Install the Float Valve

  • Install a float valve inside the water tank. This valve will regulate the amount of water that enters the tank from the municipal supply, ensuring the tank fills up but does not overflow.
  • Connect the municipal inline water feed to the float valve, ensuring the connection is secure and free of leaks.

Step 4: Attach the Suction Hose

  • Connect the suction hose to the bottom outlet of the tank. The suction hose will carry water from the tank to the pump.
  • Use a flexible pipe at the connection point to the pump. This will help absorb vibrations and reduce noise from the pump operation.

Step 5: Install the Pump

  • Install the pump next to the water tank. Ensure it is positioned on a stable surface.
  • Connect the suction hose from the tank to the inlet side of the pump.

Step 6: Connect the Pump to the House

  • From the pump, the water can be directed either into a hose (optional) or into a three-stage filter system (optional).
  • Hose Option: Connect a hose directly to the pump for outdoor water use.

Filter System Option: For filtered water supply into the house, connect a three-stage filter system to the pump outlet. The three-stage filter will help remove contaminants and purify the water.

Step 7: Install the Three-Stage Filter System (Optional)

  • The three-stage filter system should be mounted securely on a nearby wall or structure.
  • Connect the pump’s outlet to the first stage of the filter system.
  • Ensure each filter is properly installed and the system is ready to filter water before entering the house.

Step 8: Optional UV Light Installation

  • For additional water purification, install a UV light system inside the tank or at the outlet before the water enters the house.

The UV light will kill germs and bacteria in the water, providing safer drinking water.

Step 9: Final Connections

  • After the filtration system, connect the filtered water line into the house’s plumbing.
  • Ensure all pipes and fittings are securely connected and leak-free.

Step 10: System Expansion

  • This system is modular, allowing you to start with the basic setup (municipal feed, tank, pump) three-stage filter system, or UV light can be added at any time, additional tanks can also be added

Final Checks

  • Inspect the entire system for leaks and secure connections.
  • Test the float valve to ensure it regulates water levels in the tank.
  • Run the pump to ensure it transfers water effectively from the tank to the house or other uses.

This setup ensures a stable water supply with options for filtering and purification, customizable based on your needs.
